I'd like to make a thread comprised of tips for beginners, specifically for the NexStar series. I'd especially like to focus on things which the user manual omits or does not explain clearly.
I'll start with some basics that would have helped me as I took my first tottering steps into astronomy. BEFORE you align your red dot finder or do anything else with your, first put in some batteries or connect it to a power supply. Always use the hand controller buttons to point your scope, especially in azimuth. NEVER push your optical tube by hand in azimuth. When performing alignment, defocus the alignment star into a large blob that almost fills your field of view.
This will make centering the star in the much easier. When performing alignment, always use the hand controller buttons that correspond with the scope's final movements. For example, if your GoTo approach settings are Positive for both altitude and azimuth, always use the Right and Down HC buttons for final centering.
If you use a high-mag EP for more precise centering of alignment stars, be sure to replace it with a low-mag EP for GoTo (say, 25 - 32mm). Otherwise, your object will likely end up outside the small FOV of high-mag pieces. POWER: If you experience erratic GoTo behavior, there's a good chance it's a power supply/ connection issue. In my own case, the problem turned out to be the el cheapo power cord that came with my Power Tank. Buying a new cord solved the problem.

Others have found they need to spread the split male terminal pin on the mount base with a thin knife to get better contact force with the female power cord plug. (But don't spread it too much; the pin is apparently brittle, and can snap off.) Also, never use rechargeable batteries as the primary power source; they don't have enough juice. If you use an external power source, keep a set of batteries in the mount base for backup power. That way, if you notice your power cord wrapping around the tripod, you can unplug it from the mount and tidy it up without having to power off and go through the whole alignment process again. Rechargeables are okay for this backup function. I'm sure others can add more.

The key note here is it will allow you to set the WEDGE alignment using other stars (thus the name 'All Star') besides. Which is good for people like me with TWO trees blocking my entire backyard from Polaris. Means I wasted quite a bit of time and stress trying to find a gap in the tree limbs You have to explain to me what you mean. I have not yet heard of anyone who has successfully mounted and single armed on a wedge and could balance the darn thing. So I have doubts that you are actually using a wedge with your.
Otherwise the oly thing I saw in the original post was that the poster did not say that RECHARGABLE AA's are perfectly fine to be used in the base of the scope as a backup supply if you are using an external Power supply. Just replace them every month or so with fresh recharged ones. You have to explain to me what you mean.
I have not yet heard of anyone who has successfully mounted and single armed on a wedge and could balance the darn thing. So I have doubts that you are actually using a wedge with your. Wedge: Heavy piece of cast metal with a circular part that can be adjusted between 90 and 20 degrees Alt. Also a fine adjustment for Az. Allowing for alignment, firmware feature of all Nexstar. Location: Between my scope and my tripod.
When I use it. Mount Align: A process built into the Celestron 4.18 that after doing an initial two star align, points the scope directly were the scope expects a star like Vega to be if it were in perfect, then instructs the user to use the fine adjustments on the wedge to center that star. After which you do a new star align and then can use the scope goto and track without field rotation. Yes, I have run a full evening in this configuration. And later this month will do some tests, hoping for 60-90 seconds unguided. Sharing the sky with my 9yr old daughter To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 5 or greater. Some more things the SE manual does not tell you: The All Star Polar align does more than allowing stars other than to be used, it also eliminates the need to realign the afterwards. NOTE: the following comments are for the 4/5 SE mount; not the 6/8 SE mount: 1. Celestron states the maximum payload weight for the 4/5 SE mount is 10 pounds (4.54 kg).
In the azimuth mode with a 10 pound payload, the accuracy of the 4/5 SE mount is not as good as obtained with lighter loads as objects appear near the edge of the instead of near the center of the eyepiece (32mm eyepiece, f/6.3 ). In the equatorial mode using the 4/5 SE mount's built-in wedge, the 4/5 SE mount is not capable of operations with a 10 pound payload (see Bob's comments about balance). HOWEVER, the 4/5 SE mount has acceptable performance in the equatorial mode with lighter payloads (3.0 kg) such as the 4SE with a, visual back, t ring with adapter, and attached.
Unless the 4/5 SE mount's tripod is modified, it does not have the fine controls in azimuth or altitude needed to precisely polar align the mount using the All Star Polar Align or a making a precise a matter more of chance than skill. Even when modified, a precise polar alignment is difficult to obtain needing several iterations. I am keeping an ongoing thread on my experiences using the wedge on the 4/5 SE mount as a lightweight, portable, equatorial platform for. I have only started the effort and have little definitive results. Barbara mellix from outside in summary. SXINIAS To view links or images in signatures your post count must be 5 or greater. Buying a new cord solved the problem. Can you tell me where you got the new power cord? I frequently have erratic GoTo problems out in the field, where I use my Power Tank and it's default power cord. But when I'm at home on my deck, using my wall outlet, GoTo works like a charm. I just don't want to buy the first power cord I find on Google, only to discover it's the same one that came with the Power Tank in the first place.
Also, thanks for the tip on the backup batteries! My power cord frequently get tangled and I never even thought of that!
