In the beginning of the text, Mellix gives examples of when and where she would speak either Black-English or Standard-English. For example, she would speak Black-English when she was at her grandmother’s house with her entire family.
She clarifies that she, along with her brothers and sisters would put more emphasis on words such as “humid” (hyuuumid) because her relatives made her feel more “country” when she was around them. Mellix also describes how it was important to speak the correct English at the appropriate time.
For example, she says that when she spoke proper English to her brothers and sisters, they would make fun of her because Black-English was so common for them to hear. The only time Mellix felt somewhat comfortable speaking Standard-English was when she was in public with Strangers. When she was at home with certain relatives and friends, she would speak Black-English, and when she was with those less close to her, she would try and speak a mixture between the two distinct languages.
This article made me realize how different the language truly is in the North from the South. Living in New York for my entire life, I have experienced many different speech communities with all different groups of friends. I have learned different lingos and slang for words or phrases varying from group to group. For example, in the North we pronounce words differently or even use different phrases to say something such as “You guys” in the North, to phrases in the South such as, “Y’all”. This is one of the major speaking patterns I have picked up while going to school down South because most of everyone down here says Y’all. The main thing I find different is that I have picked up the word “Y’all” and have brought it into my own vocabulary usage. Now whenever I go home, instead of saying “You guys”, I say “Y’all”.
This is just another way speech communities in the South have affected the way I speak to my friends and family when I am up North.
From Outside, In Summary In the essay, From Outside, In, Barbara Mellix tells her difficulties differentiating two languages- black English and proper English. She had two different 'identities' growing up in the 1950's. One identity she had was when she spoke and wrote in 'Black English', which was usually around her close friends and family. Her other identity was when she spoke and wrote in 'Proper/Standard English' in school and in public to those she did not know. Barbara started off struggling in school, especially when she had to use standard English when she had to write about herself.
Through hard work, she was able to learn how to balance and separate the two languages in her writing. Barbara Mellix received her MFA for creative writing from University of Pittsburgh. Barbara Mellix is the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pittsburgh.

Essay on;.From Outside in – Barbara Mellix.Communication in a Global Village – Dean Barnlund.Hunger as Ideology – Susan Bordo Dean Barnlund expresses his views on the keys to survival in today’s world psychologically. His work “Communication in a Global Village”, discusses the interactions between people who come from dissimilar backgrounds and who have come to accept different norms of how simple acts in one culture posses a different meaning in another. He also discusses a person’s individuality which he expresses by using the concept of an “assumptive world”. This assumptive world is a man-made creation intended to express his uniqueness in a collective community.
Barlund states that “Every culture attempts to create a ‘universe of discourse’ for its members”. This means that every culture creates certain rules for its people to follow and a specific language to speak. He also says that the world has become a small village; people seem to have become closer to each other because technology has decreased distances. Internet, phones and transportation made it possible to travel and cross countries and cultures, and that made the world smaller and easier to reach. But even with order, there is chaos. For, physical proximity has appeared to intensify the divisions between people. However, just as people differ, so do their powers differ.
And there are powers in this world that try to unite us as humans and define who we are. They try to force their ideas and beliefs on us, taking away our freedom, not the freedom of a once imprisoned and now running free person, but the freedom of the mind, thoughts, body and most importantly the freedom of speech, the freedom to be ‘unique’. Barbara Mellix, in her essay “From outside in”, says: “Now that I know that to seek knowledge, freedom, and autonomy means always to be in the process of becoming, always to be venturing into new territory.” But how can someone become better, be different and.called communication. The world is becoming a small-intersected community for the rapid changes in technology, expansion of multinational business or activities, transportation and immigration. The sustainability of global economy largely depends on the multinational business or other activities. Therefore, it is essential to communicate effectively among the people from different cultures, nations and groups. But cultural differences stand as barrier for effective communication.
Informal understandings among the people, parties from different cultures make the base of effective communication. Proper intercultural communication is the way to make the overall communication more efficient and effective. The emerging use of social media networks also making base of effective intercultural communication.
Interactions among different cultural people are making them more familiar to the other cultures and resulting common and shared cultural activities. It is also making the informal understanding among different cultural people. Intercultural communication is also making people much more communicative than previous. It was into this era that a Professor of Media studies at Toronto University rose to media personality status. Marshall Mcluhan is famous for introducing society to catchy aphorisms such as “the medium is the message”. Although his theories have always been contested, they were popular at the time and are currently enjoying a revival.
One such theory is his vision of the “ Global Village” which I will discuss in this essay. To understand the term, a comprehension of some of his other ideas is necessary. Mcluhan was influenced by Harold Adams Innis who suggested that each medium of communication had a time “bias” which affected the stability of society. In short, he saw that “time biased” media such as stone carving would endure time and lead to a stable society. “Space biased” media, such as papyrus, could easily be revised and lead to an unstable culture (Meyrowitz 1985:17). Mcluhan went beyond this to suggest that different media have “sensory bias” (Postman went beyond this to argue that the medium contains an “ideological bias”).
Mcluhan saw each new media invention as an extension of some human faculty. In The Medium is the Massage he notes, “All new media are.

Bordo explains how and why she first got interested in looking for new advertisements of males in magazines. Bordo explicitly depicts her thoughts on how people look at the male body, how it was used in advertising, movies, and our culture overall. She also goes into how over time the use of male bodies has changed in our culture. Bordo uses a lot of pictures and actual advertisements to draw you in as a reader and get you thinking about the depictions of male physique in your own way. The author uses many major clothing companies as examples for her depictions like Calvin Klein, Haggar, Dockers, and Gucci.
She expresses that these companies and more have paved the way for the use of male bodies as “sexual objects” on purpose. Her idea relies on the entire belief that sex sales, which it does. Her thoughts go in depth on this subject, as far as to say gay stylists helped the world along with this idea.

Susan Bordo an author who writes about how the American culture has always shown and used women's bodies throughout our history and to most is considered completely normal.
In the print “Beauty Rediscovers the Male Body” Bordo states “naked female body became an object of mainstream consumption”( Bordo 168). She explains that the female body was completely normal for people to look at while on the other hand showing a naked male body was considered a taboo that most people were afraid to break. Over the history of time mainstream perceptions of masculinity have changed dramatically!
Everything from ads, movies, fashion, character, and what is socially acceptable in todays world has changed since Bordo’s writings. When men started to show more of there bodies people reacted quite differently toward what was being showed. Men were not suppose to be viewed in a sexual manner unlike females. Although this seemed quite unusual at the time it was the start of something completely new that would change the world and how we view masculinity to this day. Today mainstream perceptions of masculinity have changed completely. People use to think that guys could only do manly things, wear manly clothes, and act the way real men should. When men started to appear in there underwear, and show of there bodies in ads such as Calvin Kline, society looked the other way and thought this was completely obscure and should.

She truly portrays the changes from traditional to modern views of male modeling by society.
The Abercrombie and Fitch advertisement is the more traditional of the two. I believe that it conveys all of the types of examples and traits that a traditional male model demonstrates. On the other hand, the second advertisement is from Dolce and Gabbana and illustrates all of the traits that a modern male model has. Some may ask what types of characteristics a traditional male model has to have.
The model must be muscular, hard-working, mature, independent, athletic, masculine, stoic, determined, aggressive, competitive, responsible, impenetrable, and handy. All of these traits complement each other to create this “traditional” model look. Susan Bordo believe that in the early modeling, only homosexual men were supposed to be considered models, because of the femininity they conveyed.
However, times have changed and modeling has modernized. More and more men whom are heterosexual are entering the modeling industry today. The reason that all of these characteristics go together so well are because in order to be considered masculine, you must be hard working, mature, athletic, and muscular. 917 Words 3 Pages.
